ETIAS Requirements Explained

What is ETIAS?

The European Travel Information and Authorization System is more like a travel authorization form. It is also seen as an authorization for countries that are currently visa-free. The ETIAS form is not what you would look for if you’re trying to work or live in a European country, but rather what you’ll need for short-term trips – up to 90 days within any 180-day period.

Moreover others have explained it definitely is not a visa, but rather an automated IT system.

When will this take Effect?

According to the European Union’s Website it indicates that this new authorization will begin in 2024, but no specific date has been announced. Once the regulation goes into effect there will be further information on next steps.

Who must apply for One?

All passport holders from 60 countries who can currently travel to most European destinations without a visa (including American passport holders) will now need to get the ETIAS authorization for the same trip. There are also 30 European countries on the impacted detination list, including those in the “Schengen Area” – 27 European countries, many that are part of the European Union, that agreed to simplify boarder restrictions. This also does NOT apply to the UK and Ireland.

How can you Apply?

The applicaion process for the ETIAS is not yet open, but according to the European Union when it does open you are able to fill out all necessary forms on thier website. There is also a fee of about $8 and you must have a valid passport that will not expire in less than three months.

If you do not end up submiting an application then you will not be allowed on board (plane, train, or boat) since the application will be linked to your passport.

Furthermore, the European Union has explained that ETIAS approval will stay valid for three years or until the passport you used in your application expires, then at that point it must be renewed.
