Chicagoland Judges and Friends Discover Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland has undergone a remarkable and inspiring transformation following the implementation of the historic Good Friday Peace Agreement 25 years ago; an agreement in which American leadership played a key role.  The legal system in Northern Ireland has played an integral role in this transformation, with community-based restorative justice programs that are among the most innovative in the world.  Stakeholders from all backgrounds have made enormous strides in building a legal system that provides both accountability and justice in a society overcoming historic division and conflict.

Participants in this trip will meet with Judges, attorneys and elected leaders and learn about the unique nature of Northern Ireland’s legal system, along with both its successes and challenges.  Northern Ireland is a common law jurisdiction – similar to the English and Welsh systems and partially derived from the same sources – but with key differences in law and procedure.

Participants will receive briefings from key leaders on the ongoing Northern Ireland peace process and learn about the rich culture and history of the region which features some of Europe’s top tourist attractions.

You will visit Queen’s University Belfast, where former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton now serves as Chancellor.  The group will tour the acclaimed Titanic Museum – located where the ship was designed, built and launched – to listen to a special presentation about the little-known fate of lawsuits related to the ship’s sinking.  Participants will see the beauty and unique geological formations of Northern Ireland’s Antrim Coast and visit its newest innovative whiskey distillery .   We will also meet with key leaders in the Republic of Ireland and see the Four Courts – the center of Ireland’s justice system, Hillsborough Castle and the Trinity College Dublin School of Law.

Organizing this trip are Cook County Judge Patricia Fallon who studied at Trinity College Dublin School of Law, former Belfast Mayor and Belfast International Homecoming Host Máirtín Ó Muilleoir, and Committeeperson Sean Tenner, a winner of the 2022 Belfast Ambassador Medal.  All travel details will be handled by Cara Travel Group which has exceptional experience handling prominent US delegation visits to the region.
