Did you know that Boston and Belfast have been sister cities since 2014?

In May of 2014, the cites Boston and Belfast established a sister city, the goal of strengthening economic, trade, tourism, youth, cultural, and educational ties between the two cities with deep Irish connections. Boston’s Mayor Walsh and Belfast’s former Lord Mayor Ó Muilleoir lauded each other’s cities – Boston as the “Irish-American capital” and Belfast as Europe’s “fastest growing knowledge economy” and home of the Titanic and Game of Thrones.

The partnership aims to leverage Boston’s strengths as the U.S. college and life sciences capital and Belfast’s renaissance as a hub for investment and tourism. Joint boards are planned in each city to further initiatives like promoting travel between the revolutionary heritage cities.

Establishing a direct air route is viewed as a key way to “seal the deal” on a bond forged by shared histories of overcoming divisions and driving progress.
