The Journey Back to Greece: What a VIP Group Trip Taught Us About Slowing Down
This past April, I had the privilege of leading a VIP group to Greece for a trip that combined professional learning and development with the kind of travel experience that stays with you long after you’ve unpacked your bags. It wasn’t my first time in Greece, but every visit reminds me why this destination holds such a special place in my heart. In this post, I’ll share how a few days in Athens and Santorini reinforced a lesson I keep relearning: that the best travel experiences happen when you slow down and how that same principle applies to the way we build trips for our clients.

Our journey started in Athens, a city that never fails to pull me in. Greece embraces the Mediterranean lifestyle so effortlessly: long lunches, unhurried conversations and a genuine appreciation for the present moment. As our group settled in, I found myself wandering through the markets and streets of Athens, discovering hidden corners, stopping at cafés and soaking up the atmosphere. Every walk led to a new restaurant, a lively square or a charming neighborhood I hadn’t noticed before. There was no rush to the next attraction, just an invitation to enjoy the journey itself.

The real turning point of the trip came in Santorini, in villages that most visitors never take the time to see. In Pyrgos, we explored winding pathways, hidden courtyards, whitewashed churches and bell towers with our guide, Armani, whose deep knowledge of the island brought its history and traditions to life in a way that made every street feel meaningful.

In Megalochori, we met local artisans: painters, leather makers and jewelers who are preserving traditions passed down through generations. Standing in the shadow of the Acropolis back in Athens, I was reminded, once again, of how a place can be both familiar and endlessly awe-inspiring. That’s the moment it crystallized for me: the magic of Greece isn’t just in its landmarks, it’s in the authenticity of its people and places.

By the end of the trip, our group had experienced Greece in a way that went far beyond a checklist of sights. We shared an unforgettable dinner at Kuzina in Athens, with the Acropolis lit up on the terrace view, and came away with a renewed appreciation for how much easier travel becomes when you plan thoughtfully. Athens’ subway system was clean, efficient and simple to navigate, and the warmth of the Greek people (from restaurant owners to hotel staff to shopkeepers) made every interaction feel personal. The trip reinforced something I already believed but experienced fresh this time: the details you plan for in advance, like transportation logistics and where you stay, shape how much you’re able to relax and enjoy everything else.

- Slow down on purpose. The most memorable moments often come from wandering without an agenda, not rushing between attractions.
- Plan for the practical details early. Know exactly where your hotel is and how you’ll get there, especially in cities with pedestrian-only zones or cliffside properties without elevators.
- Seek out the people, not just the places. A knowledgeable local guide or a conversation with an artisan can turn a good trip into an unforgettable one.

Every time I return from Greece, I come back with a longer list of places I still want to explore and a renewed reminder of why we do what we do at Cara Group Travel: creating experiences that let people slow down, connect and genuinely savor the journey. This VIP trip was no exception, and it’s exactly the kind of experience we love building for our groups.
