Lindsay Lohan’s latest movie, Irish Wish, takes her character and the viewer to some of Ireland’s most beautiful locations. A new romcom from Netflix, described as a “story of luck and love and confidence”, mixes Irish whimsy, Hollywood star power and the gorgeous backdrop of scenic Ireland. Irish Wish tells the story of a bridesmaid who, a few days before her friend’s wedding, wishes she were the bride, only to wake up next day as the bride-to-be. But she then realises who her real soulmate is. The movie was shot in several locations across Ireland including Dublin, where the vibrant Temple Bar area stood in for New York. The beautiful landscape of County Wicklow in Ireland’s Ancient East also featured and the imposing Killruddery House makes an appearance. The magnificent manor has a 400-year history and has been used as a filming location for many movies and TV series including Excalibur, The Tudors, Angela’s Ashes, Camelot, Becoming Jane, Ella Enchanted and The Count of Monte Cristo. Another super scenic spot that makes it into the movie is Lough Tay, also known as the Guinness Lake. The lake is located on land owned by the Guinness family in the Wicklow Mountains and is edged on one side with white sand to resemble a pint of the ‘black stuff’. It can be clearly seen on a drive through the Sally Gap, widely regarded as one of the most scenic drives on the island of Ireland. Irish Wish also includes scenes shot on the other side of the island on the Wild Atlantic Way, including at the stunning Cliffs of Moher, one of Ireland’s top visitor attractions. Lohan stars alongside Ed Speleers, Alexander Vlahos, Ayesha Curry, Elizabeth Tan, Jacinta Mulcahy, and Jane Seymour in the movie. A new world-class digital exhibition at Trinity College Dublin transports visitors into the illuminated pages of the ninth-century Book of Kells. The Book of Kells is one of Ireland’s great cultural treasures and one of Ireland’s top visitor attractions. Thought to have been created around AD 800, it contains the four gospels of the Bible transcribed by monks on lavishly decorated pages full of intricate and elaborate artistry. It contains the earliest known surviving image of the Virgin and Child in Western manuscript art. They then embark on a 360° immersive journey in the pavilion filled with stories, sights, and sounds inspired by the ancient manuscript and the Old Library’s precious collections. This includes a spectacularly innovative digital reconstruction of the Long Room. Visitors to the Experience will follow the Book of Kells on its extraordinary journey from Iona in Scotland over the Irish Sea to Kells, and onwards to Dublin in the present day, as 1,200 years of history and stories unfold before their eyes. The Book of Kells Experience also explores and showcases several of the books and manuscripts from the Old Library’s historically significant collections. With the sun heading for solar maximum, 2024 is shaping up to be a great year for seeing the Northern Lights. The island of Ireland has three dark sky parks, Om Dark Sky Park and Observatory in County Tyrone, Mayo Dark Sky Park, and Kerry International Dark Sky Reserve. These offer the darkest of skies and therefore the chance to see the lights. Even if you don’t get to see the aurora you will be star struck by the clarity of the night sky and the constellations and planets you will be able to see, even with the naked eye. The island of Ireland has three dark sky parks, Om Dark Sky Park and Observatory in County Tyrone, Mayo Dark Sky Park, and Kerry International Dark Sky Reserve. These offer the darkest of skies and therefore the chance to see the lights. Even if you don’t get to see the aurora you will be star struck by the clarity of the night sky and the constellations and planets you will be able to see, even with the naked eye.

The ‘decree’ became part of Irish folklore and even into the early twentieth century it was taken seriously by some people who were anxious to be betrothed by the time Lent came round. In the southwest of Ireland, in particular, those who remained single in February could find their names on the Skellig Lists. These printed ballads were named after Skellig Michael, a tiny island off the coast of County Kerry, which was regarded by some as a last chance saloon for the unattached. Ironically, a leap year was also seen as an unlucky year to get married, so even those who managed to snag a fiancé had to wait for the walk up the aisle.
