Belfast’s Grand Central Station opens its doors

Belfast’s new multi-million-pound transport hub, the largest integrated hub on the island of Ireland, has opened for phase 1 of its operation.
The state-of-the-art integrated transport hub for trains, coaches and buses welcomed its first bus passengers on 8 September and will roll out operations across all services over the coming months.

The new station has 26 bus stands, eight railway platforms as well as cycle and taxi provision and is bigger than London’s Kings Cross station. It aims to deliver enhanced local and international connectivity and encourage sustainable, active travel for a healthier city and wider region. This will support the region’s climate goals and ambitions for social wellbeing.
The cross-border Belfast to Dublin Enterprise services will relocate to the new station with an hourly timetable later this year.

The transport hub, located in the new Weavers Cross development in the city, is set to deal with around 20 million customer journeys every year and will feature contactless ticketing for ease of use. The spacious, modern, bright building is designed to be a welcoming and comfortable space for travelers and those meeting friends and family. There will be a number of retailers on site including Marks &Spencer, BrewDog, Starbucks and Prêt-à-Manger adding to the passenger experience. Local businesses will also be encouraged to avail of the opportunity for pop-up stores within the building.

With a clear focus on active travel, the area adjoining Belfast Grand Central Station will include allocation of road space to pedestrians and cyclists with the provision of more than 200 spaces for cycle parking.
Outside Belfast Grand Central Station there will be a new public space, Saltwater Square, which will have a strong emphasis on arts and culture for everyone to enjoy. Planned art projects will recount stories of the area’s past, celebrate its present and imagine its exciting future. Development of this outside space is still underway.
