The Good Friday Agreement, signed on April 10, 1998, was a landmark peace treaty built on political leadership, vision, and compromise to help Northern Ireland move forward from The Troubles, ending three decades of violence. The conflict began in 1969 when peaceful civil rights protests by Irish Catholics were met with hostility, escalating tensions between Catholic nationalists and Protestant unionists, with Protestants controlling Northern Ireland despite being a minority on the island, while Catholics were a minority within Northern Ireland itself.
Home to the Northern Ireland Assembly, Stormont is an iconic government building set within expansive parkland.
